Town Awarded $250,000 Grant for Twelve Mile Creek Greenway

The Town of Waxhaw has been awarded a $250,000 matching grant through the Great Trails State Program to construct the Twelve Mile Creek Greenway – Prescot Connector, an important addition to the Town’s growing trail network.

Waxhaw is one of 37 projects in the Piedmont region to receive funding in this latest round, according to a release from Governor Josh Stein, which saw nearly $11 million awarded to help solidify North Carolina’s vision as the “Great Trails State.”

This funding will support the construction of a key greenway segment that will trace the path of Twelve Mile Creek and connect Town Creek Park to the Prescot neighborhood and Prescot Village commercial district, enhancing local mobility, access to nature, and a safe path for seamless pedestrian and cyclist access.

“This grant helps bring us one step closer to realizing a truly connected community,” said Parks and Recreation Director Dena Sabinske. “The Twelve Mile Creek Greenway – Prescot Connector will serve as a vital recreational and transportation link for residents, supporting health, accessibility, and economic opportunity for years to come.”

The project is part of the larger Carolina Thread Trail system and will provide a nearly 4-mile continuous route from the NC/SC Suspension Bridge to NC-16. The new connector will include a 120-foot bridge over Twelve Mile Creek and be constructed to Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards, allowing for safe use by pedestrians, cyclists, and families of all ages and abilities.
